What we collect
The contact form
If you write to us through the form on the contact page, we receive whatever you type into it. That normally means a name, an email address so we can reply, and the body of your message. Submissions are delivered to us by email and are also saved in this site’s own database by the form storage plugin the site runs, which means a copy sits on the server until it is deleted.
Only send what is needed to answer your question. The form is not a secure channel, and there is no reason to put financial details, account credentials, or health information into it.
Server access logs
Like every web server, ours records requests. A log line typically holds the IP address the request came from, the date and time, the page requested, the referring page if the browser sent one, and the browser user agent string. These logs are what make it possible to investigate an outage, block an abusive source, and tell real traffic from automated scraping.
Traffic measurement
We keep basic statistics about how the site is used. A randomly generated identifier is stored in your browser so a repeat visit can be recognized as the same browser, and page views, the page you arrived from, and clicks on outbound links are sent to a measurement endpoint on a separate domain that we operate. This is our own measurement, not an advertising network, and the data is not sold, syndicated, or used to target advertising at you anywhere.
The identifier is a random string with no meaning outside our statistics. Clearing your browser storage discards it, and your next visit is counted as a new one.
Cookies and browser storage
The site uses a small number of cookies and equivalent browser storage entries, for security, for caching, and for the measurement described above. Each one is set out by purpose on our Cookie Policy page, together with instructions for controlling them in your browser.
What happens when you click through to Amazon
Product links here lead to Amazon, sometimes by way of a redirect on a domain we operate so the click can be counted. From the moment you arrive at Amazon, Amazon collects data about you under its own privacy notice and sets its own cookies, including the one that attributes a later purchase to this site. We cannot see your Amazon activity, your basket, your order, or your account. What comes back to us is aggregate reporting on clicks and commissions, with no identity attached. What we do not collect
There are no reader accounts on this site, so there is nothing to register for and no password of yours to store. Nothing is sold from here, so no payment details are ever taken or handled. Comments are switched off, so there is no comment history. We do not run a mailing list, and we do not buy, sell, rent, or trade personal information with anyone.
Why we are allowed to hold it
For readers in the United Kingdom and the European Economic Area, the legal bases we rely on are these. Handling a message you sent us rests on your consent, given by choosing to write to us, and on our legitimate interest in answering correspondence. Server logs and security measures rest on our legitimate interest in keeping the site running and defending it from abuse. Traffic measurement rests on our legitimate interest in understanding which pages are read, balanced by keeping the data minimal and never using it to identify or target an individual.
How long it is kept
These are the targets we work to. They are stated honestly as targets, because some of this data sits in systems where deletion happens on a rotation schedule rather than to the day.
- Contact form submissions: kept while your enquiry is open, and cleared out periodically after that, with a target of no more than 24 months. If you ask us to delete your message sooner, we will.
- Server access logs: rotated by the server as a matter of routine, with a target of roughly 30 days, longer only if a specific security incident is being investigated.
- Traffic measurement: individual page view records are aimed at a rolling window of about 26 months, after which what remains is aggregate counts with no identifier attached.
Who else is involved
Running a website means other companies are unavoidably in the chain. The hosting provider stores the site and its database. A content delivery and security network sits in front of the site, filters abusive traffic, and therefore sees requests as they pass through. An email provider carries messages sent through the contact form. Amazon receives you when you click an outbound link. Servers involved may sit in the United States or elsewhere, so data may be processed outside your own country. None of these parties is given access to our data for their own marketing purposes.
Children
This site is written for adults buying audio equipment and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13, or under 16 where local law sets that threshold. If you believe a child has sent us information through the contact form, write to us and it will be deleted.
Your rights
If you are in the United Kingdom or the European Economic Area, you have the right to ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, to have inaccurate data corrected, to have data erased, to restrict or object to processing including processing based on legitimate interests, to receive your data in a portable form, and to withdraw consent at any time. You also have the right to complain to your national data protection authority.
If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information has been collected and for what purpose, to request deletion, to request correction, and to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. On that last point there is nothing to opt out of: this site does not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined under California law, and it does not offer financial incentives in exchange for data.
