Sealed vs Ported Subwoofers: What the Difference Means for You

Every powered subwoofer on the market is one of two things: a driver in an airtight box, or a driver in a box with a tuned hole in it. That single design decision shapes how deep the sub goes, how loud it gets, how big the cabinet has to be, and how it behaves on music versus movies. Manufacturers rarely put the distinction in the headline, but it is usually the first thing worth checking.

What the enclosure is doing

A speaker driver radiates sound from both faces of its cone. The front output is what you want. The rear output is the same signal inverted, and if it escapes and meets the front output it cancels it. The enclosure exists to solve that problem.

A sealed box, sometimes called acoustic suspension, simply traps the rear wave. The air inside acts as a spring that adds stiffness to the driver’s own suspension. Output rolls off below the system resonance at a gentle 12 decibels per octave.

A ported box, also called bass reflex or vented, gives the rear wave a controlled escape route through a tube of a specific length and diameter. The mass of air in that tube resonates with the springiness of the air in the box, and near the tuning frequency the port radiates in phase with the cone. The result is more output for the same input, but below tuning the port stops helping and response falls at 24 decibels per octave, twice as steeply.

Why sealed subs often sound tighter

The common description is that sealed subs are tight and ported subs are boomy. That is a caricature, but there is real engineering under it.

Group delay is the time different frequencies take to leave the cabinet. A ported box stores energy in its resonant port, and near tuning that energy is released slightly late. On a sustained bass note this is inaudible. On a sharp transient, a kick drum or a door slam, the delayed component smears the leading edge. Sealed alignments have lower group delay because there is nothing storing and re releasing energy.

The other half is the rolloff slope. A sealed sub that measures flat to 30 Hz is still producing useful output at 20 Hz, just quieter. Room gain, the natural boost small rooms give to very low frequencies, often partly cancels that gentle slope, so a sealed sub can measure deeper in a real room than it does on paper.

Sealed models on this site include the SVS SB-1000 Pro, which SVS rates at 325 watts RMS with a 12 inch driver in a cabinet listed at roughly 13 inches on a side, and the larger SVS SB-3000, a 13 inch sealed design SVS rates at 800 watts RMS. Note that the SB-3000 listing gives its driver size two different ways, 13 inches in one field and 15 inches in another, and also carries a “battery life: 3 hours” line on a mains powered subwoofer. Treat the manufacturer’s own model naming as the reliable figure and the auto filled spec table as noise.

Why ported subs go louder

A port is free amplification in a narrow band. Because the port radiates in phase with the cone near tuning, the same amplifier and the same driver produce meaningfully more sound pressure than they would sealed. For movie effects, where the goal is high output somewhere between 25 and 50 Hz, that is exactly the right trade.

The Klipsch RP-1000SW is a 10 inch high excursion design in a 55 pound cabinet, and Klipsch’s Reference Premiere line has long been built around getting high output per watt. Its listing does contain an error worth flagging: the title says RP-1000SW while the model name field reads RP-1400SW, which are different products. Confirm the model on the box before ordering. The smaller Klipsch R-101SW uses a front firing 10 inch woofer, which Klipsch positions as giving more freedom over placement than a down firing design.

The catch is the cliff below tuning. A ported sub tuned to 28 Hz produces very little at 20 Hz, and the driver unloads there because the port no longer resists cone motion. Designers add a subsonic filter to stop the cone tearing itself apart on the very low content in some film soundtracks. If a ported sub has no such filter, warehouse rumble in a movie can push it past its limits at volume.

The third option: force cancelling designs

Some sealed subs mount two drivers back to back on opposite faces, wired so they move outward and inward together. The acoustic outputs sum while the mechanical reaction forces cancel, so the cabinet barely vibrates. That lets a small enclosure handle enormous excursion without walking across the floor.

The KEF KC92 uses this approach with a pair of 9 inch drivers in a cabinet listed at just over 14 inches deep and around 50 pounds, and the SVS 3000 Micro does the same with dual 8 inch drivers in an 11 inch cube. Both are sealed, and both exist to solve the apartment problem: real low bass from something that fits beside a media console.

Which one should you buy?

Look for a sealed design if you listen to a lot of music, if the room is small enough that room gain will do some of the work, if placement options are tight, or if you value even response over maximum loudness. Sealed also suits systems built around a stereo pair rather than a movie rig, where the sub is filling in below a bookshelf speaker rather than reproducing explosions.

Look for a ported design if movies are the main use, if the room is large, or if you want the most output per dollar and per watt. Ported designs also pair naturally with high sensitivity speakers such as the Klipsch R-620F, where the whole system is built to go loud without large amplifiers.

And if the constraint is neither of those but simply that you cannot make low bass at all without a complaint, a tactile transducer such as the Dayton Audio BST-1 delivers the physical part of low frequency effects through the furniture instead of the air. One last point that matters more than the enclosure argument: two smaller subs almost always beat one larger sub in the same room, whatever their alignment, because multiple sources average out room modes. If your budget covers one large ported unit or two modest sealed ones, the pair is usually the better system.
