Two packaging claims cause most of the disappointment in this category. The first is a range figure measured under conditions you will never stand in. The second is silence about the fact that some of these radios are illegal to transmit on without a license. Both are worth understanding before you buy, because they change which radio is the right one.
Where the big range number comes from
A radio advertised at 36 miles is not lying. That figure is derived from unobstructed line of sight propagation, typically calculated between two elevated positions with nothing in between, over water or from one hilltop to another. It describes the physics ceiling, not a use case.
The governing limit is the radio horizon. For VHF and UHF, the distance to the horizon in miles is approximately 1.23 times the square root of the antenna height in feet, and for two stations you add the two horizons together. Two people holding radios at head height, roughly six feet, therefore have a maximum theoretical reach of about six miles even across perfectly flat, empty ground. Everything in between subtracts from that.

Height beats power, every time
Doubling transmitter power adds 3 dB, which is a marginal change at the edge of coverage. Raising the antenna above the obstruction between you and the other station can add tens of decibels, because it converts a blocked path into a clear one. This is why a 5 watt handheld in a valley reaches less than a 0.5 watt handheld on the ridge above it, and why repeaters exist: a repeater is simply an antenna placed high with a radio attached to it.
Antennas matter for the same reason. The short rubber antenna supplied with most handhelds is a compromise for pocketability, and a longer whip is a genuine improvement where the radio service allows one to be fitted.
The licensing rules in the United States
This is where the categories separate, and it is worth being exact about it.
FRS, license free
The Family Radio Service needs no license. Its 22 channels are limited to 2 watts of effective radiated power on channels 1 through 7 and 15 through 22, and 0.5 watts on channels 8 through 14. The antenna must be permanently attached and cannot be changed. Repeater use is not permitted. That combination of low power and a fixed antenna is precisely why a genuine FRS radio such as the Midland T51VP3 X-TALKER cannot be made to reach the distances on the box, and it is also why it is the right choice for a family at a campsite or a crew working the same site.
GMRS, license required, no exam
The General Mobile Radio Service shares channels with FRS but allows more power, removable antennas, and repeaters. It requires an FCC license, which involves no examination. The fee is currently 35 dollars for a ten year term, and one license covers the holder and their immediate family. Handhelds are permitted up to 5 watts on the shared channels, and mobile units up to 50 watts on the main channels. If you want more range than FRS gives, this is the legitimate route.
Amateur radio, license and examination required
Amateur bands require an operator license earned by passing a written examination, the entry level Technician class in the United States being a 35 question test. Radios sold as ham equipment fall here. The listing for the BAOFENG BF-F8HP PRO describes a 10 watt tri band handheld covering VHF, UHF, and the 1.25 meter band, and the Baofeng AR-5RM is likewise sold as a 10 watt ham radio. Those are amateur band radios. Transmitting on them without an amateur license is not permitted.
There is a second point about these radios that is frequently missed. The FCC has issued enforcement advisories stating that many imported handhelds are not certified under the rules that govern FRS and GMRS, which means they may not be used on those channels even by someone who holds a GMRS license. Buying a wide coverage handheld does not grant permission to use every frequency it can tune. Emergency provisions exist for genuine threats to life or property, but they are a narrow exception rather than a workaround.
Listening only
Receiving is different from transmitting. Privacy codes are not privacy
Almost every radio advertises privacy codes, sometimes multiplied into a headline figure like 2662 combinations. These are CTCSS or DCS tones, and all they do is keep your speaker quiet unless an incoming transmission carries the matching tone. Anyone on that channel with the code switched off hears everything you say. They are a squelch convenience, not encryption, and nothing about a consumer radio conversation should be treated as private.
What to actually check before buying
- Which service the radio is certified for. This determines whether you need a license, and it is stated in the manual rather than on the front of the box.
- Battery type. Radios that accept AA cells keep working when the charger is not available. Proprietary packs are lighter and eventually unobtainable.
- Weather channels. NOAA receive is common and genuinely useful, and it costs nothing to have.
- Ingress protection. An IP rating tells you what the radio survives. Products vary widely and the number is easy to compare.
- How many you need. Two radios are one conversation. Groups need matching models so the channel and tone settings can be checked at a glance.

Where the audio side comes in
Radios are used in noisy places, which makes the accessory choice as important as the radio.
