IP and IPX Ratings on Earbuds and Sport Headphones

The IP code on a set of earbuds is not a marketing invention. It comes from IEC standard 60529, it is defined precisely, and it is measured under specific laboratory conditions. Knowing what those conditions are is the difference between a rating that protects you and a rating that quietly does not cover the thing you are worried about.

Reading the code

An IP rating has two digits. The first covers solid objects and dust. The second covers liquids. An X in either position means the product was not tested for that category, not that it failed. IPX7 therefore says nothing at all about dust ingress, and IP54 says the product handles dust and splashing but was tested for neither immersion nor a jet.

The ratings are not strictly cumulative. IPX7 and IPX5 test different things, which is why some products carry both, written as IPX5 and IPX7 rather than a single number. A product rated only for immersion has not necessarily been tested against a pressurized jet.

What the test does not include

This is the part that matters most for sport headphones, and it is rarely stated on a listing.

The test uses fresh water. Sweat is not fresh water. It is a saline solution with dissolved urea and lactic acid, and it is mildly acidic. Salt is conductive and corrosive, and it attacks the charging contacts on earbuds and their cases far faster than tap water does. An IPX7 rating does not mean sweatproof, and manufacturers who mean sweat resistance usually say so separately.

The test uses a new unit. Seals are made of rubber and adhesive. They compress, dry out and take a set over time, and every drop on a hard floor stresses them. A two year old set of earbuds does not have the sealing performance of the one that was tested.

The test is at a defined temperature and pressure. Hot water expands trapped air and pushes it past seals. Showers combine heat, steam and soap, none of which are in the test protocol.

The case usually is not covered. On true wireless products the buds and the charging case are often rated differently, and it is common for the case to carry no rating at all. Putting wet buds into an unrated case is one of the most common ways this hardware dies.

Liquid damage is normally a warranty exclusion. Read the warranty text. A rating describes a laboratory result. It is not a promise from the manufacturer to replace a drowned product.

The listing field that means nothing

Retail specification tables carry a water resistance level field, and it is free text. It gets filled with words like water resistant and waterproof that have no defined meaning and no test behind them.

The examples across this site make the point. The Soundcore Liberty 4 Pro and the MINISO MS156 both carry waterproof in that field with no code attached. The Beats Solo Pro listing also says waterproof, which is difficult to reconcile with an on-ear headphone that Apple does not publish an IP rating for at all. The Xiaomi Redmi Buds 6 Active and the JVC Nearphones both say water resistant, again without a number.

None of that is necessarily a deliberate exaggeration by the manufacturer. Marketplace specification tables are assembled from supplier feeds, and a field that expects a phrase gets a phrase whether or not a test result exists behind it.

The rule is simple. If there is no two character code, there is no rating. Look for the code in the manufacturer’s own specification sheet, and if you cannot find one there either, assume the product has not been tested.

Salt water, chlorine and swimming

Sea water and chlorinated pool water are both harder on a product than the test water, and both are common exclusions in warranty terms. Even where a product tolerates them mechanically, rinsing in fresh water afterward and drying before charging is the difference between a season and a year.

Swimming has a separate problem that no IP rating solves. Bluetooth operates at 2.4 GHz, and water absorbs that frequency heavily. The link between a phone at the poolside and earbuds under the surface will not hold. Genuine swimming headphones carry onboard storage and play files locally for exactly this reason, and no amount of water resistance makes a standard Bluetooth product work submerged.

What to actually look for on sport headphones

  • IPX4 is the working minimum for sweat. Below that you are relying on luck.
  • IPX5 or better if you rinse them. Rinsing under a tap is a jet, not a splash.
  • Check the case rating separately on any true wireless product.
  • Prefer a rating published by the manufacturer over a word in a marketplace listing.
  • Dry the contacts before charging. Most water damage on earbuds happens through the charging pins under power, not through the shell.

Products that put the rating front and center are usually the ones that took it seriously. The EarFun Air is one where the IPX7 figure is part of the product identity rather than a field somewhere in a table. Sport designs such as the Skullcandy Push Active and the Occiam T9 are worth checking against the manufacturer sheet on the same basis.

The wired exception

Wired sport earphones sidestep a good part of the problem. There is no charging port, no case, and no battery compartment, which removes three of the openings that let liquid in. The MEE Audio M6 is a wired sport design with ear hooks and memory wire, and its listing carries the same vague water resistant label as everything else, but the mechanical case for it is stronger simply because there is less to get inside.
