More complaints about earbuds trace back to fit than to any other cause. Weak bass, poor noise cancellation, buds that work loose on a run, one side quieter than the other: all four have the same root, and none of them is fixed by buying a different model. They are fixed by getting a seal.
Why the seal decides almost everything
A sealed in-ear works by pressurizing a small pocket of air between the driver and your eardrum. That pocket is what lets a driver a few millimeters across produce low frequencies at all. Break the seal and the pressure escapes instead of reaching the eardrum, and low bass is the first thing to go, because long wavelengths leak most easily.
A gap you could not see is enough. This is why the same pair of earbuds can sound bass heavy on one person and thin on another, and why swapping to a tip one size larger sometimes transforms a set that seemed poorly made.
Noise cancellation depends on the same seal. The electronics only have to handle whatever the physical barrier failed to block, so a leak both admits more noise and destabilizes the correction. On models with a hybrid system such as the TOZO NC3, tip choice affects the result more than any setting in the app.
Your two ears are not the same
Ear canals are asymmetric in most people. Different diameters, different angles, different lengths. Using a medium tip on the left and a large on the right is normal and correct, not a sign that something is wrong.
The usual symptom of an ignored asymmetry is a stereo image that sits off center, or one side that seems quieter. Before adjusting balance in software, swap tip sizes on the quiet side. It is the fix far more often than a hardware fault.

Memory foam is the most reliable route to a seal because it expands to the shape of the canal rather than asking the canal to accept a fixed shape. JVC built a product around this with the Marshmallow HAFX38W, where the foam tip is the defining feature. The tradeoffs are real though: foam absorbs some high frequency energy, so the presentation is warmer, and the material takes a permanent set after a few months of use.
Bore width is worth understanding too. The bore is the channel through the tip, and a narrower one damps treble slightly while a wider one lets more through. Swapping tips changes frequency response measurably, which is why manufacturers of in-ear monitors such as the Truthear HEXA and the Truthear Zero RED ship several sets rather than one.
Getting them in properly
Insertion technique changes the result as much as tip size does. The ear canal is not a straight tube, it curves, and pulling the outer ear up and back with the opposite hand straightens it enough to seat a tip properly. Insert, then release the ear.
Rotation matters on angled housings. Many in-ear monitors are designed to be inserted at an angle and then rotated slightly toward the front of the head so the nozzle points along the canal rather than into its wall. If one bud sounds muffled, rotation is the first thing to try.
Two quick checks. First, play something with strong bass and press the bud gently inward. If the bass increases noticeably, you did not have a seal. Second, chew or talk. If the sound changes, the fit is being held by a jaw position you will not maintain.
Retention is a separate problem from sealing
A tip can seal perfectly and still fall out, because a seal resists air, not gravity and motion. Physical retention is a different mechanism.
- Ear hooks loop over the top of the ear. The most secure option, used by the Skullcandy Push Active and, in wired form with a memory wire you bend to shape, by the MEE Audio M6.
- Wings and fins brace against the ridge of the concha. Less obtrusive than a hook and nearly as effective, but they need to be the right size.
- Over-ear cable routing on wired monitors takes the cable weight off the bud entirely and kills handling noise. This is standard on designs like the ARTTI T10 Pro.
- Neckbands put the weight on your neck instead of your ears, which is why they persist for calls and gym use.

Cable noise, and how to stop it
Microphonics is the sound of a cable rubbing against clothing traveling up to the bud. It is a wired problem only, and it has three fixes: route the cable over the ear, use the chin slider to take up slack, and clip the cable to your shirt. Any two of the three usually eliminate it.
Fit tests in apps
Several manufacturers include a fit test that plays a tone and uses the internal microphone to measure how much leaks back out. Soundcore includes one on models such as the Liberty 4 Pro, and it is genuinely useful because it measures the seal rather than asking you to judge it. Where a fit test exists, run it after every tip change.
Troubleshooting
- No bass: go up a tip size, or try foam. This is almost always the answer.
- Bud works loose during exercise: the seal is fine and retention is not. Add a wing or a hook rather than a larger tip.
- Aches after an hour: go down a size, or move from silicone to foam, which distributes pressure.
- One side quieter: swap tip sizes between ears before suspecting the hardware.
- Cancellation feels weak: check the seal first. It is a sealing problem far more often than a processing one.
- Third party tips: check the nozzle diameter of your earbuds before ordering, since tip bores are not universal, and confirm the tips still fit inside the charging case afterward.
Tips are consumable and inexpensive relative to the earbuds themselves. A set of foam and a set of wide bore silicone will tell you more about what a pair of earbuds can do than reading another specification sheet will.
