A turntable is the only source component where the user still assembles part of the signal path. Four things decide whether it works properly: the cartridge and how it is set up, the phono stage that follows it, the ground connection, and whether the platter actually turns at the right speed. Get those right and the deck performs to its design. Get any one wrong and no amount of spending fixes it.
Why a phono stage is not optional
Records are not cut flat. The RIAA curve reduces bass and boosts treble during cutting, because full level bass would need grooves so wide that a side would hold two songs. Playback has to apply the exact inverse curve, and that is the first job of a phono stage.
The second job is gain. A moving magnet cartridge puts out a few millivolts. A line input expects a signal hundreds of times larger. A phono stage supplies roughly 40 dB of gain for moving magnet, and considerably more for moving coil. Plug a cartridge straight into a line input and you get a thin, quiet sound, which is the curve and the missing gain, not a broken cartridge.
You have three places to get that stage. Some decks build it in, such as the Denon DP-29F with its built in phono equalizer, which means it can feed any line input directly. Some amplifiers include a phono input, though many current models omit it. Failing both, an external unit like the ART DJPRE II does the job for less than the price of a decent cable. What you must not do is use two at once. Running a deck with its internal stage switched on into an amplifier’s phono input applies the curve twice and overloads the input.

For most systems a moving magnet cartridge is the right answer, and the Ortofon 2M Red is one of the common upgrade choices in that class. When you fit one, set the tracking force with a gauge to the figure in the manufacturer’s manual rather than to a rule of thumb. Too light is worse than slightly heavy: a stylus that cannot stay in the groove chatters against the walls and damages records. Set anti skate to match, then check the arm sits parallel to the record surface.
Alignment is the step people skip. The cartridge has to be positioned so the stylus traces the groove at the right angle across the whole side, which means setting overhang and offset with a printed protractor. It costs nothing and it is the difference between clean inner grooves and distortion on the last track. Grounding, and the hum that will not go away
A cartridge generates millivolts, and the tonearm is a piece of metal near a motor. Without a common ground reference, the whole assembly acts as an antenna and you hear a steady hum at mains frequency. That is what the thin separate wire from the turntable is for: it connects the deck’s chassis and arm to the ground terminal on the phono stage.
Three practical rules follow. First, connect the ground wire whenever you use a phono input. Second, if the deck’s own phono stage is switched on and you are feeding a line input, the ground wire is often unnecessary and can create a loop, so try it both ways and keep the quieter one. Third, if hum appears only when you touch something, or changes when you move the tonearm cable, the fault is in the cable or the connection rather than the cartridge. Hum that rises and falls with the volume control is coming from before the volume control; hum that stays constant is downstream of it, and that distinction locates the fault faster than swapping parts.
Speed accuracy, and how to check it
Pitch error is audible long before most people identify what they are hearing. A platter running one percent fast raises the whole record by about a sixth of a semitone, and unsteady speed produces the wavering quality known as wow. Belt driven decks slow down as the belt ages and stretches, and they are also sensitive to a dirty pulley. Direct drive decks hold speed electronically and generally drift less.
Checking is easy. A strobe disc under a mains powered lamp, or one of the free phone applications that reads the platter’s rotation, will tell you within a fraction of a percent. Both 33 and 45 rpm should be checked, because on some decks the two are adjusted independently. If your deck runs consistently slow, replace the belt before assuming anything is wrong with the motor.
What the turntable plugs into
Once the phono stage has done its work you have a normal line level signal, so the rest of the system is unremarkable. A stereo receiver such as the Yamaha R-S202 takes it on any line input, and drives a pair of passive speakers like the Wharfedale Linton. All in one boxes can work too, but check the input list before buying: the listing for the Klipsch The One II describes a switchable phono and line input, while shelf systems such as the Sharp XL-BH250 are worth checking case by case, since many accept line level only.
Placement and vibration
A turntable is a microphone pointed at its own shelf. Bass from your speakers travels through the floor into the plinth, up the arm, and back out as a rising resonance that gets worse as you turn up. Put the deck on a rigid shelf that is not touching a speaker cabinet, level it with a bubble level, and keep it out of the direct path of a subwoofer. The order to work in
- Level the deck and confirm the belt or drive is correct.
- Check speed at 33 and 45 rpm.
- Align the cartridge with a protractor, then set tracking force and anti skate to the manual.
- Choose one phono stage and only one, and match it to the cartridge type.
- Connect the ground wire, then listen for hum with the volume up and no record playing.
- Only then start comparing cables and mats. The steps above account for nearly all of the audible difference.
