Soundbar Buying Guide: Channels, Subwoofers, and Room Size

The number printed on a soundbar box, 2.1 or 5.1 or 3.1.2, decides more about how the thing will sound than the brand name does. Read it correctly and most of the buying decision is already made. Read it as a marketing score, where bigger is automatically better, and you can end up with seven channels of sound crammed into a room that never had space for them.

How to read the channel numbers

Channel notation has two or three parts. The first number counts main speakers at ear level. The second counts subwoofer channels. The third, when it exists, counts upward firing or height drivers used by object based formats such as Dolby Atmos.

  • 2.0 is left and right, with no dedicated bass driver.
  • 2.1 adds one subwoofer channel. That sub may be a separate box or, as with the Sony HTX8500, built into the bar itself.
  • 3.1 adds a discrete center channel, which is the single biggest improvement for dialogue.
  • 5.1 adds two rear surround channels.
  • 3.1.2 or 5.1.2 adds two height drivers on top of that.

A useful rule of thumb: a center channel does more for movie dialogue than height drivers do for atmosphere. If you find yourself reaching for subtitles, prioritize the front channel count, not the height count. The Klipsch Core 200 is listed as a 3.1.2 configuration bundled with a 10 inch wireless subwoofer, which is the shape most living rooms actually need.

Do you need a separate subwoofer?

Physics answers this one. Low frequencies need moving air, and moving air needs cone area and cabinet volume. A bar three inches deep cannot displace as much air as a 10 inch driver in a cubic foot of MDF. That is not a criticism of any brand, it is a limit on the format.

Built in woofers still have a job. The ZVOX SB500 lists internal 4 inch woofers and leans on its AccuVoice dialogue processing rather than on a separate bass box, which suits an apartment where a subwoofer would carry through the floor to a neighbor. Sony’s HTX8500 takes a similar approach and describes itself as 2.1 with a built in subwoofer, though the same listing also quotes a 7.1.2 figure. Those two numbers describe different things: one is physical amplifier channels, the other is what the processor decodes and simulates. Manufacturers rarely separate them clearly.

If you want bass you can feel during a movie, plan on a separate box. That can be the wireless sub bundled with a system such as the ULTIMEA Poseidon D60, whose listing specifies a 5.25 inch wireless subwoofer, or a standalone unit added later to a bar that has a subwoofer output. Standalone models such as the Klipsch RP-1000SW use a 10 inch driver in a 55 pound cabinet, which is a different class of output entirely. If you plan to add one later, the subwoofers category is where to start.

Room size, bar length, and seating distance

Bar length should roughly match the television, mostly for appearance. Seating distance is what governs how much system you need. A bar sitting six feet from the couch in a 12 by 14 foot room has an easy job. The same bar in an open plan space with a kitchen behind it is fighting a much larger volume of air, and no processing mode fixes that.

Room shape also decides whether virtual surround is worth paying for. It works by bouncing sound off side walls. In a narrow room with hard walls the effect can be convincing. In a wide room, a room open on one side, or a room with a bookcase where a reflection point should be, the effect largely disappears. That is the argument for real rear speakers, which is what the Sony HT-S40R ships in the box as a 5.1 package with a wireless rear amplifier.

Where extra channels stop helping

Seven channel packages such as the ULTIMEA Poseidon D80, listed as a 7.1 system with four wired surround speakers and a 6.5 inch subwoofer, assume you can place four speakers around a seating position with enough distance between the side pair and the rear pair to matter. In a room where the couch backs onto a wall, the rear pair and the side pair end up nearly on top of each other and the extra channels collapse together. That is a room constraint, not a product fault, and it is worth measuring before you buy.

The opposite case is a bar sold with no subwoofer at all. The Sony BAR 9 listing describes a 13 speaker bar with 360 Spatial Sound and room calibration, and the packaged style is soundbar only, so the low end is whatever the bar itself produces until you add Sony’s optional sub. Its specification table still carries a “subwoofer connectivity: wired” line, which contradicts the wireless architecture the same listing describes in prose. When a spec table and a product description disagree, treat the description as the design intent and confirm with the manufacturer before counting on a feature.

Connections that will still matter in five years

HDMI eARC carries lossless and object based audio from the television back to the bar, and it lets one TV remote control volume. Optical cannot carry those formats and caps out at compressed 5.1. If a bar you like is optical only, that is a hard ceiling on what it can ever decode, whatever the box says about Atmos compatibility.

Count the HDMI inputs too. A bar with passthrough inputs can sit between a console and the TV, which matters if your set is short on ports. Bluetooth is convenient for casual music but it is a lossy path, so it is not the connection to judge a bar by.

A note on bars that are not for living rooms

Category listings can mislead. The JBL RallyBar appears in home audio soundbar rankings but is built for UTVs, golf carts, and boats, with an IP66 rating and clamp mounting hardware. Its own specification table both claims the unit is waterproof and lists the water resistance level as not water resistant, so treat that field with suspicion. It is a capable outdoor vehicle speaker and a poor choice under a television, which is worth knowing before a search result puts it beside home models. More conventional options sit in the soundbars category.

A short buying order

Measure the seating distance first. Decide whether dialogue clarity or bass impact is the problem you are solving, because a center channel and a subwoofer fix different complaints. Confirm the television has eARC. Then pick the smallest channel count that covers the room you actually have, and put what you saved on channels into a better subwoofer instead.
