Subwoofer Placement: Getting Bass Right in a Real Living Room

A subwoofer is the only speaker in a home system whose performance is decided more by where it sits than by what it cost. Below roughly 200 Hz, wavelengths are longer than the room itself, and the room stops being a neutral container and becomes part of the instrument. Two identical subwoofers, one in a corner and one beside the couch, will measure differently by 15 decibels or more at some frequencies in the same living room.

Why rooms do this

Sound at 40 Hz has a wavelength of about 28 feet. In a typical living room that is longer than any dimension, so the wave reflects off the far wall and comes back to interfere with itself. Where the outgoing and returning waves line up, bass is reinforced. Where they cancel, bass disappears. These standing waves are called room modes, and they exist at fixed frequencies determined by the room’s length, width, and height.

The practical result is a bass response that is not one thing but a map. There are seats where a bass line sounds thunderous and seats four feet away where the same note nearly vanishes. Moving the subwoofer changes that map. Turning the volume knob does not.

Start with corner loading, then decide if you like it

A subwoofer in a corner couples to three room boundaries at once, which raises output by several decibels across the low end. That is free efficiency, and it is why so many setup guides start there. It also excites every room mode that exists, so corner placement tends to produce the loudest bass and the least even bass.

Front corners near the television are the conventional starting point. A compact sealed design such as the SVS 3000 Micro, which SVS builds around dual opposed 8 inch drivers in an enclosure listed at about 11 inches on a side, is easy to tuck into a corner without dominating a room. The subwoofer crawl

This is the one placement technique that costs nothing and works in any room. The method exploits a property of acoustics called reciprocity: if a sound path works well in one direction, it works equally well reversed.

  1. Put the subwoofer on the main listening seat, at roughly the height your ears sit.
  2. Play a track with a repeating bass line, or a slow bass sweep, on loop.
  3. Crawl the perimeter of the room on hands and knees, ear at floor level, listening at every candidate location.
  4. Note the spot where the bass sounds most even, where notes are all roughly the same loudness rather than one note booming and the next disappearing.
  5. Put the subwoofer there.

It feels silly and it works. The goal is not the loudest position, it is the most even one. Loudness you can add back with the gain knob. Evenness you cannot.

What to do when the good position is unusable

Sometimes the crawl points at the middle of a doorway. Real rooms have furniture and children. There are three fallbacks.

The first is a second subwoofer. Two smaller subs in different positions smooth room modes far more effectively than one large sub in a single position, because the peaks of one tend to fall where the dips of the other are. Two units such as the Klipsch R-101SW, a front firing 10 inch design that Klipsch says can be placed flexibly because the driver fires forward rather than down, are often a better outcome than a single larger box.

The second is app based room correction. The SVS SB-3000 is controlled through a phone app with parametric EQ and preset memory, which lets you notch down a stubborn peak. Correction handles peaks well and dips badly, because filling a cancellation null requires enormous power and it usually just heats the voice coil.

The third is tactile transduction, which sidesteps the room entirely. A device such as the Dayton Audio BST-1 bolts to a couch frame and vibrates the furniture rather than the air, so it adds the physical sensation of low bass with no acoustic output for a neighbor to complain about. Its specification sheet confusingly lists a woofer diameter of 20.32 centimeters even though a bass shaker has no cone at all, which is a reminder that spec tables get auto filled with fields that do not apply.

Setting crossover, phase, and gain

Set the crossover by the capability of your main speakers, not by preference. Small satellites or bookshelf speakers may need 100 Hz or higher. Full range towers such as the Klipsch R-620F, a 40 inch floorstander with dual 6.5 inch woofers, can cross lower and hand off less work.

The phase control matters more than most people expect. If the sub’s output arrives slightly out of step with the main speakers around the crossover point, the two partially cancel and the result is a hole in the response right where the music lives. Flipping phase and keeping whichever setting sounds louder at the seat is a crude but effective test.

Two mistakes worth avoiding

The first is treating the gain knob as a tone control. Bass that is set high enough to be obvious on every track is set too high. A correctly integrated subwoofer is mostly inaudible as a separate object and reveals itself by absence when you switch it off.

The second is putting the subwoofer inside a cabinet or hard against a wall it cannot breathe against. Ported designs in particular need clearance at the port, and a port aimed into a shelf two inches away will chuff and compress. Sealed designs are more tolerant of tight placement, which is part of why models such as the SVS SB-1000 Pro and the KEF KC92, both sealed, suit rooms where furniture dictates the position.
